Stop FIV - Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

Feline AIDS is caused by infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). FIV causes a potentially fatal viral disease that interferes with the immune system of a cat.

The virus lives in the blood of the infected cat and is carried in its system throughout its life. Healthy cats contract the infection through being bitten by an FIV positive cat - approximately 18% of cats in SA are FIV positive.

Cats infected with FIV may remain healthy for a number of years. While some infected cats show no sign of disease, others may display initial symptoms.

Eventually the immune system becomes too weak to fight off other infections or diseases. As a result, the cat will die from one of these subsequent diseases.

Keeping Your Pet Cool

With the hot weather not far away, here are some tips on how to keep your pet cool:
  • Ensure adequate shade and clean drinking water is available at all times
  • Limit exercise to early morning and late evening
  • Add ice to their water bowl, or make a "doggy iceblock" by filling a plastic container with water or stock and add some treats, cooked rice, raw fruit/vegies or dog biscuits and freeze. The resulting ice block will keep your dog cool as well as entertained

Renovations Update...

The third and final stage is now underway and is planned to be all finished by Christmas!
We are back in the newly renovated and refreshing waiting room, reception and consult rooms with the brand new entrance.
The new entrance requires you to press a green button to enter and exit.
It is now more important than ever to ensure your pet is secured on a leash or in a cage while in the clinic!

Heartworm is in SA...

There have been reports of Heartworm Positive dogs in South Australia recently, so please ensure your dog is receiving appropriate heartworm prevention.

ALL dogs are at risk, they don't need to come in contact with other dogs to develop this disease as it is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Heartworm is a deadly disease and symptoms may take months to appear.

Please phone us at the clinic if you are unsure and we can discuss the best prevention plan for you.

Puppy Pre-School Reunion!

Guinness & Zack playing
Our annual Puppy Pre-School Reunion was held at Hannaford Reserve on Saturday 2nd November. All the graduates from July 2012 to July 2013 were invited.

We had 14 puppies and their families come along and everyone had a great time. Bodil kindly set up an obstacle course that was a challenge for some and simple for others (when we could get Louis out of the tunnel that is!).

Thanks to Advance Pet Nutrition for the use of their tent and providing sample bags, and everyone went home with a "luck dip" prize!

Medication Repeats

Does your pet require ongoing medication for a health condition? We realise your time is important to you, so next time you are running low on medication, please phone us first to ensure we have them in stock to save you a wasted trip to the clinic.

It takes time to prepare medication repeats, as firstly Vet approval is required and they may also need to be specially ordered in. We can then phone you or give you a time frame of when they will be ready for collection.

Temporary Relocation...

Enter through the gate on Stephen
Terrace and follow the signs

To enable renovations of the main entrance, waiting room and consult rooms, we will be vacating this section of the building temporarily and consulting from the newly renovated north-western end of the building (old chiropractic rooms) for approximately 1 month.
Moving day is planned for Saturday 12th October, so the clinic will be closed for consulting on that day as we will have all hands on deck relocating everything.

Food Challenges for Cats...

As cats are used to hunting and capturing their prey in the wild, providing their food in a bowl twice a day or free choice provides no challenge. They would normally spend up to 6 hours/day hunting, stalking, catching and consuming their prey. Providing large chunks of raw meat or chicken wings simulates eating their prey and is also good for their teeth.

Injured or Sick Wildlife

If you find injured or sick wildlife, you are encouraged to bring the animal to our clinic where we can treat and care for them. Often people find an animal and are unsure who they can contact. The best plan is to bring the animal to the clinic were we can assess and then pass them on to fauna rescue carers.

Dental disease is largely preventable and manageable through regular veterinary visits and good home care. Visit or phone the clinic to find out what you can do at home to help reduce the risk for your pet, as well as trying to avoid those potentially costly dental procedures. There are many products available including pet toothbrushes & toothpaste, water additives, mouth cleansing gels, as well as specifically formulated diets and treats that help reduce plaque and tartar accumulation and also freshen breath.

Although we did not win our category, it was a great experience and an honour to be nominated in the first place.

Could you recognise heart disease in your pet?

Knowing the early signs of heart disease can make a big difference to your pet’s life. It means you can seek medical help from us and we can then start treatment early, achieving a better quality of life for your best friend.

Heart failure affects the pumping mechanism of the heart. It is often referred to as congestive failure as it results in pooling of blood in the lungs.
